As the year closes...

By Shaaranya Pillai | Deputy Director

This year has taken an unprecedented course. Our South Asian Community Home continues to be a priority for us, though we have had to pivot to address the overwhelming needs this year with culturally tailored services, including meal provision as well as virtual programs.

In the past year we have never stopped working and serving our community. In addition to virtual events providing physical activity, education, and creative opportunities, we have provided culturally competent meals delivered directly to the safety of seniors' homes. We deliver meals three times a week to about 112 seniors, which has surpassed 13,000+ meals served to seniors this pandemic. We are still working to feed as many seniors as possible in the year to come. The individualization and cultural understanding that goes into the meals help ensure that seniors are not left having to eat poor quality meals due to their income or culture.

We have also been delivering grocery packages to seniors, specifically curated to ensure nutritional meals that are also culturally competent. Each grocery package costs anywhere between $55-75. We have delivered groceries to over 500 seniors. To date, we have delivered 1,000+ grocery packages, each filled with South Asian kitchen staples such as dhal, rice, oil, onions, spices etc.

As the year comes to a close and the public health situation evolves, we want to ensure we are able to continue these programs into the following year. We are excited to have the South Asian Community Home up and running once it is safe to do so.

We hope from the bottom of our hearts that you have a safe and wonderful holiday season.
