In South Sudan and Malawi, women face extreme barriers like limited access to capital, gender discrimination, and lack of education, making entrepreneurship a distant dream. Building on the success of our Homa Bay incubator, which launched 130 businesses and improved household incomes by 120%, this expansion will provide training, mentorship, and resources to empower women. By addressing these challenges, we'll create sustainable businesses, uplift families, and transform communities.
In South Sudan, women face extreme poverty due to conflict, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to education and financial resources. Over 80% of South Sudanese women live below the poverty line, relying on subsistence farming or informal markets. Similarly, women in Malawi face comparable challenges, with limited access to education, capital, and skills training. These barriers perpetuate generational poverty. The incubator will support 20 women in the first cohort to break this cycle.
BBS will address this problem through a microbusiness incubator that empowers women with essential business skills. Using the Street Business School model, which is designed for individuals with little to no formal education, the program provides practical business training. Participants also receive no interest loans or grants to launch their businesses and ongoing coaching to guide them through the startup phase. This holistic approach ensures sustainable growth and economic independence.
This project will break the cycle of generational poverty through women entrepreneurs. In Homa Bay, the existing incubator has led to a 120% increase in household income, tracked through the Street Business School's Impact Tracker. Women have high savings rates, with key household expenses being healthcare and school fees. As women's businesses grow, entire communities will benefit from improved economic stability, increased access to education and healthcare, and enhanced local development.
