Initial Follow-up Report

The Friends of Liberia—Liberia Health Team have over the years recognized continuing professional development (CPD) as an important way of improving the professional standards and skills of healthcare works in Liberia. A low-resource country, many schools and hospitals in Liberia lack the resources to conduct annual CPD for their employees.

With supports from Friends of Liberia USA, GlobalGiving, and Global Health Ministries, the FOL-LHT has conducted five CPD Workshops for nursing/midwifery faculty and clinicians across Liberia. One of the objectives of our CPD Workshops has been to provide participants with evidence-informed workshop learning resources to share with their colleagues in their respective nursing/midwifery schools and hospitals. This strategy, in our opinion, will trigger multiplier impacts and therefore contribute to improving the healthcare delivery systems in Liberia.

Participants from the 2024 CPD Workshops, which were conducted from Monday 8 to 12 January 2024 at the Phebe- Esther Bacon College of Health Sciences (Campus-I), have been making efforts to roll-out the 2024 workshop learning resources. This roll-out was was a recommendation we gave them at the close of the workshop.

Using a Google Survey Form, we were able to obtain information from the 2024 workshop participants about the roll-out of the CPD workshop in their respective institutions.

Nursing/Midwifery School

  • Phebe-Esther Bacon College of Health Sciences (Bong County)—6 participants
  • TNIMA School of Nursing/Midwifery (Monrovia)—30 participants
  • Bomi Community College (Bomi County)—15 participants
  • Ruth Ramstrand (Lofa County)—10 participants

Hospital

  • Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital (Nimba County)—35 participants
  • J. J. Dossen Hospital (Maryland County)—30 participants
  • Ganta United Methodist Hospital (Nimba County)—25 participants
  • JFK Hospital School (Monrovia) 35 participants
  • St. Francis Hospital (River Cess County)—32 participants
  • J. J. Dossen Hospital (Maryland County)—30 participants
  • Rally Town Hospital (Grand Kru)—15 participants

Joint workshop (faculty and clinicians)

  • Martha Tubman Hospital & Midwifery School—38 participants

Conclusion

An important factor in rolling out workshop resources is to obtain a multiplier effect. After the 2024 FOL-LHT CPD workshop in Phebe, 301 participants are the multiplier effects of our 2024 participants’ efforts to share the knowledge they gained with their colleagues at their respective institutions. While we await the other participants to provide feedback, we feel this effort is laudable. A majority of the participants recommended that the training should continue to be conducted so as to improve their professional knowledge, skills, and attitude in providing quality care.

We appreciate the support of all the GlobalGiving, Friends of Liberia, and Global Health Ministries contributors. Without your support this work would not be possible. Thank you!
