Indigenous women save the sacred Mayan bee

Durante este periodo de la intervención (de marzo a junio de 2020), y derivado de una serie de factores externos, fue necesario modificar tanto las actividades como los resultados planteados en la implementación del proyecto.

Contingencia sanitaria

En México, fue en marzo cuando se presentó un aumento escalonado de los casos positivos del virus SARS-CoV-2, lo cual provocó que se establecieran medidas de distanciamiento social y confinamiento en hogares para evitar la propagación.

Esto provocó un fuerte golpe en la economía de las familias de las beneficiarias de este proyecto, pues por un lado, varios miembros de sus familias (que aportaban con un ingreso), perdieron sus empleos por los recortes realizados tanto en la iniciativa privada como en el sector gubernamental. Por otro lado, ante la caída de la demanda de sus productos y el aislamiento de algunas comunidades, fue casi imposible lograr establecer canales de comunicación para la venta de sus productos.

Como medida de emergencia ante esta situación, Educampo realizó tres actividades esenciales:

1 – Levantamiento de información de las 276 beneficiarias para conocer su situación y planear las medidas a implementar.

2 – Capacitación en línea y a distancia.

3 – Gestión y entrega de despensas para las familias afectadas, que les permite satisfacer sus necesidades básicas inmediatas.

Tormenta tropical Cristóbal

En la primera semana de junio, la tormenta Cristóbal afectó a comunidades del sur de México. En Campeche y Yucatán, cerca del 90% de las beneficiarias tuvieron algún tipo de pérdida material, la mayoría sufrió: casas inundadas, materiales dañados en los talleres, pérdidas de los meliponarios y/o muerte de sus abejas.

Para ayudar a las beneficiarias, el equipo de Educampo estableció Centros de Acopio en las oficinas de campo, logrando la entrega de despensas, ropa y artículos de limpieza.

Para superar las consecuencias de ambos fenómenos, todos los donativos recibidos a través de la plataforma GlobalGiving durante junio y julio se destinarán exclusivamente para la adquisición de insumos para la producción.

During this period (March-June 2020), as result of external factors, it was necessary modify the activities and the results proposed in the implementation of the project.

Coronavirus

In Mexico, it was in March when there was a gradual increase in the positive cases of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This led to the implementation of social distancing and home confinement measures to prevent the spread.

This caused a strong blow to the economy of the families of the beneficiaries: on the one hand, several members of their families (who contributed with an income), lost their jobs due to cuts made both in the private sector and in the government sector. On the other hand, given the lack of demand for their products and the isolation of some communities, it was almost impossible to establish communication channels for the sale of their products.

As an emergency measure in this situation, Educampo carried out three essential activities:

1 - Mapping of cases of the 276 beneficiaries to find out their situation and plan the measures to be implemented.

2 - Online and distance training.

3 - Management and delivery of food for affected families, which allows them to meet their basic needs.

Tropical storm Christopher

In the first week of June, the storm Cristóbal affected communities in southern Mexico. In Campeche and Yucatan, nearly 90% of the beneficiaries had some kind of material loss, the majority suffered: flooded houses, damaged materials in the workshops, loss of the meliponarios or death of their bees.

To help the beneficiaries, the Educampo team established Collection Centers in the field offices, achieving the delivery of pantries, clothes and cleaning supplies.

To overcome the consequences of both phenomena, all donations received through the GlobalGiving platform during June and July will be used exclusively for the acquisition of inputs for production.

Durante 3 meses de trabajo, en Educampo hemos podido acercarnos e iniciar la conformación de grupos con un total de 276 mujeres indígenas y rurales en los estados de Campeche y Yucatán, en el sureste del país.

Con estas mujeres, se continuará con la implementación de un modelo de atención que pone énfasis en la educación no formal, para obtener resultados estables y a largo plazo, lo cual genere en impacto positivo en ellas y sus familias, pero también en la población de abejas en peligro de extinción.

Hasta el momento, contamos con:

• 136 mujeres en Campeche.
• 140 mujeres en Yucatán.

"Me llamo, Filigonia y vivo en Yucatán. Antes de entrar a este grupo no conocía a las abejas meliponas, aunque dicen que eran muy comunes en esta región. Poco a poco, con ayuda de nuestra promotora y de otras personas, como biólogos, nos hemos capacitado y adquiriendo conocimiento.

Estamos aprendiendo a transformar la miel en productos alimenticios y de belleza, y ahora podemos decir que ya conocemos más de los beneficios de la miel Melipona y de otras cosas que las abejitas producen (como polen y cera). Queremos lograr vender nuestros productos al extranjero y atraer la atención en otros países de la importancia de la abeja.

Yo tengo un triple beneficio, porque mi familia puede usar productos con miel, yo tengo conocimiento para ser empresaria, y puedo ayudar a mejorar el medio ambiente al ayudar a salvar a la abeja Melipona."

During 3 months of work, at Educampo we have been able to start the formation of groups with a total of 276 indigenous and rural women in Campeche and Yucatán, in southeastern Mexico, near the southern border.

With these women we are implementing a care model that emphasizes non-formal education, to obtain stable and long-term results, to generate a positive impact on them and their families, but also on the bee population in danger of extinction.

So far, our scope is:

• 136 women in Campeche.

• 140 women in Yucatán.

"My name is Filigonia and I live in Yucatán. Before entering in this group, I did not know about the melipona bees, although they were very common in this region. Little by little, with the help of our promoter and other people, as biologists, we have trained and acquired knowledge.

We are learning to transform honey into food and beauty products, and now we can say that we already know more about the benefits of Melipona honey and other things that bees produce (such as pollen and wax). We want to sell our products abroad to attract attention in other countries of the importance of the bee.

I have a triple benefit: my family can use products with honey, I have knowledge to be an entrepreneur, and I can help improve the environment by helping to save the Melipona bee."
