Dearest supporters and friends of Sporos,
Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! Winter Solstice was only a few days ago, marking officially the beginning of winter, even though this year here it has been particularly warm so far. Days are short and nights are long. We are taking the time to rest and reflect on the year that passed and to plan the year ahead.
The last quarter we focused a lot on preparing our winter gardens and the harvesting of our olives. By now we are finished with our olive harvesting. It wasnt a particularly good year, production-wise, but this is was a general phenomenon due to the hot summer and the draught which followed. Many olive farmers had no produce at all! Nevertheless, thanks to our heavy mulching and our regenerative practices we did have a satisfactory yield. Soon we will be presenting to the public our new brand of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which we will be selling to generate income for the sustainability of our organisation. Stay tuned for more news on this soon!
In November we taught our second workshop on Urban Agriculture at our Ecohub garden site. The workshop was part of the greater Regenerative Camps and Settlements project, organised by Re-alliance, a coalition of field practitioners, policymakers, educators, community leaders and humanitarian and development workers.
In December we taught an olive harvesting workshop for refugees. The aim of the workshop was to give to the participants the theoritical and practical skiils needed for the olive harvesting, so that they can then work during the harvest season as olive pickers. Besides skilling them up, we also help our students get work by connecting them with local farmers in need of helping hands. By doing so, we create multiple benefits, the obvious monetary benefits for both parties, but more importantly the integration of our students and teh bridging of cultural differences by bringing locals and refugees together.
We are happy to inform you that we won an award and in Spring we will materialise our new project, My School Tower Garden. It is our newest STEM workshop for primary school children, during which we explore the science behind and the benefits of food cultivation using aeroponics. We will use our tower gardens to grow food in 10 primary schools, monitoring and learning loads in the process. We will keep you posted on the progress in our next report.
We are also very happy to announce the newest member of our team, Brian from Kenya. Brian arrived to Lesvos very recently and showed a keen interest in the work we do. Initially he was visiting our garden and he recently decided to join us full time and do an internship at our farm. We were of course more than happy to welcome him to our team.
Dear supporters, we can't thank you enough for your help. None of teh above would have been made possible without your trust and support. We wish you a new year filled with health, love, joy and prosperity. See you in a few months with more updates about our work.
