Tyne Met prepares for their trip to Mexico

By Kate Robey | Charitable Trust Operations Manager

Dear Supporter,

Preperations and additional fundraising are going very well for the group of students from Tyne Metropolitan College who are heading off to Mexico soon. We were able to donate £200 to each scholar to help towards their fundraising goal. Here are some of their testimonials:

Leonie – ‘I want to be part of this trip because I know it will be life changing and will mean I am able to prove people wrong who thought I'd always stay in ill-health and not socialise or do anything positive for myself. These people who said that moving to college would be a bad move for me as I apparently needed extra support. I knew these people were judging me without knowing me properly and this is the perfect chance to prove them wrong. Not only this but it is a perfect chance for me to make a difference to someone's life and they can make a difference to mine by giving me a sense of pride and accomplishment. I feel I deserve the £200 that was applied for as due to being a full time student, working part time and caring for my family at home.’

Kenny - I am looking forward to going to Mexico to help out after hearing all about the experiences my brother has been involved in, in the last two years. I have worked hard to raise the funds needed and I am very grateful for the £200 help from GVI. I feel I deserve this because I am dedicated to the cause and looking forward to spending time with the children, having fun and teaching them but also listening to their experiences and learning from them. I will be training to be a Teacher after finishing college and university and volunteer in a school at the minute so Mexico will help with this and I can share my experiences with others on my return home.

____________________________________

Tyne Met is a medium sized college in the North East of England which recruits students from predominantly low income families and where very few students go to university. Student’s who are volunteering currently study on our health and social care Level 3 Extended diploma, Level 1 sport, Level 3 sport, Level 3 Childcare and Level 2 & Level 3 Travel courses. These are all sectors which require students to gain many different experiences to help boost their employability.

Through tutorial encouragement, such as volunteering abroad and employability skills boosting, and the ethos of our Department to raise the aspirations of the students, it has empowered the students and encouraged them to apply to university and gain employment after college.

Therefore we believe it is our job as educators to help raise aspirations and change the lives of our students and with your donation we could make this possible for 10 students this summer. Due to funding being dramatically cut form last years trip which was a donation of £9000 which is no longer available our task this year has become much harder. Therefore we really do appreciate any or all help available and believe your money is for an extremely good cause.

Your support means so much to youths like these, so thank you for your continued and generous support.

Warm Wishes,

GVI Charitable Trust
