International Scholarships for Change

Dear Supporters, 

When we have students joining us as National Scholars they travel to one of our GVI Volunteer Abroad programs for a Service Learning Trip.

In the last few months, we have been focusing on awarding school groups with scholarship support. These students would otherwise not have an opportunity such as this were it not for additional support. 

We have told you all about the Tyne Met scholars who travelled to South Africa and Mexico most recently. All of the students had life-changing experiences and have highly recommended the experience to their peers.

Today I want to tell you a little bit about some of the desired outcomes of these trips so that you can see the long-term benefit of helping motivated and passionate young learners access opportunities like this. 

All out the students should learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how they have an important part to play in contributing to them. They should know that it is not 'someone else's job', but all of our jobs to contribute towards the SDGs. 

Hand in hand with that, they should begin to explore their own personal role in global development. The students must begin to see what it means to be global citizens. 

When the students leave the project, they should have developed new skills and awareness, including writing, reflection, intercultural competency and how to be a global citizen.  As well as this, they should have had an opportunity to think about and practice their 'soft skills' like leadership, teamwork, adaptability. All of these skills will stand them in good stead as they continue their schooling, contemplate their careers and become role-models in their own communities.

This year we are hoping to secure enough funding so that we can sponsor another group trip and continue to see our young UK citizens become more global citizens!
