After running vocation enrichment programs for several months, we began recruiting students for the academic year in December 2020. On January 18, 2021, the Jennifer Albee Enrichment School opened to the public for its first official academic school year, offering Early Childhood Development (ECD) to primary school level education to girls three years old and above.
As a result of COVID-19, many parents were unable to raise the financial resources for all of their children to attend school. The United Nations reports that 11 million children are out of school, and Liberia is no exception. Locally, more than 40% of school children did not enroll this academic year due to financial constraints.
To afford girls the opportunity to attend school during this challenging time, GEM-Liberia decided to open the Jennifer Albee Enrichment School as a tuition free academic school, relieving the financial burden for some Barnersville parents by enrolling 76 girls, ages 3-14, on a tuition-free basis. We recently launched a ‘100 Girls Scholarship Fund’ drive locally and have received funding for 17 scholarships to date.
Since our last report, GEM-Liberia hired seven teachers, two ECD teachers and five primary school teachers. We conducted two teacher training workshops on Classroom Management and Child Protection. The school's Parent Teacher Association is also underway.
The school has begun setting up a reading room by securing books for all classes, and has begun the preparation of a computer lab for next academic year by purchasing five monitors and a laptop computer.
We can't believe that we have already been open one month! It has been a wonderful month, interacting with parents, students, and local authorities, strengthening partnerships to promote girls’ education in Barnersville.
We look to the future, with greater prospects and anticipation to providing real time education to more girls in Liberia. We are grateful to all of our supporters. We could not have reached this far without your kind donations.
