Global Handwashing Day October 2023

Thank you so much for donating to this project making sure that children have a clean, safe, healthy environment at school with access to clean water, latrines and health education.

Earlier this month, Brighter Communities Worldwide celebrated Global Handwashing Day.  This global day is celebrated annually on October 15th to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands as a means to prevent transmission of disease and to help keep people healthy.

Your support of this project helps to provide access to clean water so that children can wash their hands at school. This is done by harvesting rain water from the school roofs, storing the water in cement tanks with a tap for access and containers to carry the water to where it is needed.

The schools select children from across the different classes to form health clubs.  These clubs learn about health, water and sanitation.  They carry out regular reviews of the school and flag areas that need to be fixed.  They share what they have learned with the other children in their classes and they share duties around the school to look after rubbish, keep classrooms clean and keep handwashing areas equipped with water and soap.

This year we celebrated Global Handwashing Day across 9 schools in the county and at Nyabangi Secondary School, the students were joined by some volunteers from Ireland who are on a volunteer project in Kenya this month.

The volunteers and staff distributed soap and joined the students who demonstrated the steps to follow for best practice in handwashing.  They showed the volunteers how a Tippy Tappy works.  This is a container to hold water with a tap or sometimes even a hole blocked with a stick that when open or removed allows the water to flow. Hands can then be washed under the ‘running’ water.

The students did a review of different parts of the school where water is needed and showed the volunteers the different areas – handwashing stations at latrines, water for handwashing and drinking at the kitchen, storage of water.  They finished the celebrations planting trees with the students and teachers.

Caroline Chelangat, the schools education co-ordinator explained that tree planting is included in the schools project as part of actions to tackle climate change.   Firewood is the main source of fuel for cooking and as a result de-forestation is a major environmental issue in Kenya.  As part of Brighter Communities Worldwide’s education programmes in the schools and community we are supporting tree planting of indigenous species to help with forest restoration.  So far, over 11,500 trees have been planted across 61 schools.

If you would like to support this project again, then please save November 28th in your calendar – this is Giving Tuesday and GlobalGiving have a bonus funds of $1.2million USD available on that day.  The more funds you donate, the more bonus funds our projects will receive.  Thank you.
