5 times on Ventilator in 26 Days!

By Sarah Ahmed | Project Leader

Assalam-o-alaikum and Ramadan Kareem!

The most challenging situation a parent can face is watching their child fight for survival. Having a fragile, innocent baby in NICU is the most intense experience of life.

In Pakistan, preterm birth is one of the three leading causes of neonatal mortality and accounts for more than one-third of all deaths in newborns. In low-income settings, half of the babies born at or below 32 weeks die due to a lack of feasible, cost-effective primary care. These newborns require specialized care to prevent mortality.

There are some silent heroes working day and night and doing whatever it takes to save these little angels. A group of such heroes is working at Al-Mustafa NICU and performing their roles as Physicians, Nurses and NICU Technicians and treating different cases in NICU on standard protocols with challenges posed by the Covid-19.

5 Times on Ventilator in 26 Days!

As mentioned earlier that our NICU Team goes to the last extent to save a baby. In the past months, a difficult situation arose when a baby crashed five times in 26 days. Our team made efforts to protect the infant by giving a rapid response, intubating the baby for ventilator support, providing every possible treatment, and successfully saving the baby.

In the previous quarter, 246 babies were born at Al-Mustafa Hospital. All the babies delivered in our hospital are kept under observation for 1 to 2 hours in NICU. After a complete checkup of babies by a Consultant Paediatrician,  the healthy ones are handed over to their parents.

We received 112 admissions at Al-Mustafa NICU in the last four months, out of which 75 were outdoor admissions. The majority of the babies admitted are preterm (having gestational life of fewer than 34 weeks), with a low birth weight of less than 1500g, babies having respiratory distress, babies with sepsis, and those with HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy).
