Introduction:
This report highlights the progress of the Mental Health & Psychosocial support for Youths project during the last quarter. The project aims to provide comprehensive mental health and psychosocial support services to 300 vulnerable youths (aged 15-24) in Kawempe, Activities carried out included the screening of two adolescents for depression, training health workers on identifying depression and counseling youth with mental health issues, community outreach to raise awareness, and group counseling,
Screening for Depression:
In the last quarter two adolescents, aged 15 and 17, were screened for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The results showed that both adolescents scored above the threshold for moderate depression (PHQ-9 scores: 15 and 18 respectively). Both the adolescents were referred to a mental health professional for further assessment and treatment. Their families were engaged in the treatment plan and also education on support strategies.
Training Health Workers:
Two training session were conducted for 15 health workers on identifying depression and counseling youth with mental health issues. The training covered: - Signs and symptoms of depression in adolescents, Risk factors and triggers, Evidence-based counseling techniques (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy) and Referral pathways for specialized care.
Community Outreach:
One community outreach event was organized to raise awareness about mental health and depression among adolescents. Over 50 community members, including parents, teachers, and youth, attended the outreach. The event included a panel discussion, informational booths, and a Q&A session.
Group Counseling:
One group counseling session was conducted for 10 adolescents. The session focused on coping strategies, stress management, and peer support. The participants reported feeling comfortable sharing their experiences and learning from others.
Success Story:
One of the screened adolescents, a 15-year-old girl, was identified with moderate depression. She received counseling sessions from a trained health worker, focusing on cognitive-behavioral techniques and coping strategies. After six sessions, her PHQ-9 score decreased to 5, indicating a significant reduction in depressive symptoms. She reported improved mood, increased engagement in school activities, and enhanced relationships with family and friends.

Mental health and psychosocial support are critical for adolescents' well-being. Early identification, community outreach, and group counseling can help address depression and other mental health issues among youth. Health workers play a vital role in providing support and connecting adolescents with necessary resources.
