Project Report | Dec 19, 2024
Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

By Mariana Bohorquez Uribe | Communicator at Fundacion Oyeme

Thanks to the psychological support provided during this project, we have achieved significant progress in supporting people with hearing disabilities. From the beginning, we identified that many of them faced mood disorders due to various factors, including a lack of family communication. In many households, the absence of sign language knowledge limits dialogue and emotional expression, making it challenging for users to connect with their families.

Another important challenge was strengthening social skills. Early in the project, we observed difficulties in interpersonal relationships, which impacted participants' emotional well-being. To address this, we conducted group workshops focused on key topics such as sexuality, self-care, healthy relationships, and setting boundaries. These activities not only promoted psychoeducation but also significantly enhanced social skills and strengthened bonds.

Additionally, we noticed that, in some cases, family and social support networks were weakened. To address this, we activated social support pathways in collaboration with institutions such as family commissioners, the Attorney General's Office, and the Medellín Mayor’s Office. These actions aim to ensure participants have the necessary support to reduce exclusion factors and psychosocial risks.

Through a cognitive-behavioral approach, psychoeducational strategies, and the promotion of healthy living habits, we have successfully minimized risks such as suicidal behaviors and substance abuse. This consistent effort has greatly improved the mood and overall well-being of our users.

Looking Ahead
For 2025, we aim to continue focusing on essential aspects such as decision-making, emotional management, and assertive communication. These skills will be key for users to effectively navigate the challenges they may encounter in their daily lives.

Thanks to your support, this project has been possible. Together, we are paving the way for a better quality of life for people with hearing disabilities. Let’s keep moving forward!
