A hyperactive child in roller skates class

By Chao-yi LEE | Project leader

It was time for the roller skates class again. I saw a thin boy who got off from grandpa’s motorcycle and ran to the campus immediately. The grandpa behind shouted:” Little Fei, you haven't got your wheel shoes “.yet~ Yes, he is the kid in our class, Little Fei! He is one of the most naughty and active kids in the class and always breaks the rules.

Little Fei is currently in the first grade of elementary school receiving special education resource services. He was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). His parents divorced from his childhood and he was brought up by his mother and natal relatives. Lack of family care, he is always dirty every time he comes to class. His grandpa's way of raising is laissez-faire or beating and scolding. Little Fei also has a half-sister, but due to the disparity in age, there is actually no  interaction in between. His mother worked as a child care worker with long working hours and there was little parent-child interaction.

This is Little Fei first time to join roller skating activity. Little Fei was always absent-minded when he first came to class. He was unwilling to cooperate with the coach’s instructions, did not wear team uniforms, did some strange behaviors.

Once, everyone had gathered for class, but Little Fei was nowhere to be seen. I went back to campus in a panic and shouted:” Where are you Little Fei? Come out quickly, class is over!” At this time, there was a voice from the distant slide saying: “I am here!” I saw him running over and said innocently, “are you looking for me? “I turned my head and told him, “Yes! I have been looking for you. You can’t run around in class next time. You have to stay with your grandfather or report to the coach, OK? “He squinted his eyes innocently:” Got it! “ He took my hand and walked to the playground. At this moment, I suddenly felt that this little boy was actually not that annoying!

When class was over, his grandpa urged him to put his shoes back quickly, while Little  Fei used to procrastinate carelessly. No matter what the grandpa said, he was still indifferent, and even needed the help of grandpa to clean up. Until one day, this situation was seen by several other enthusiastic parents, who encouraged him to clean up quickly and go home. He did then confidently said: I put it away! At this moment, I walked by him and gave him a compliment. In the next few classes, I found that he would take the initiative to put the wheel shoes in the shoe bag without reminding.

In the training course, Little Fei still occasionally mischievous, attracting attention, but in this way, he has actually grown and improved a lot. From the beginning of non-cooperation, he can now do exercises with everyone and follow the instructions of the coach.  The wheel shoes are no longer scattered everywhere, but he can put them in the shoe bag.

In fact, such ADHD children seem to want us to care more about him, to be more tolerant and patient, to accompany and encourage more, I believe they can do better too!
