By Staff | Wayuu Taya Foundation
Through the project Wayuu Taya Intercultural Orchestra, we promote the transformative power of music as a powerful tool for education, personal development, and cultural preservation. We offer the opportunity to the child and youth population of the depressed Guajira subregion of the Zulia state in Venezuela to have a vision transformation and advance their social and cultural improvement.
The creation of the Nucleo Wayuu Taya, Intercultural Orchestra and Choir, in alliance with the National System of Youth and Children Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, has been operating in the Mara Municipality of Zulia state since November 2022. It is part of The Wayuu Taya's mission. It has become the second nucleus of El Sistema, integrated by indigenous children from Venezuela and the first one of the Wayuu Ethnic group.
We invite you to join our mission and provide hope and opportunity through music. Your support can help us reach more children and youth, preserve indigenous culture, and have a real and lasting impact on the Wayuu community.
PROMOTION AND MOTIVATION
On November 5, 2022, at the facilities of the Tepichi Talashi School in the Mara Municipality, we began promoting the Wayuu Taya Nucleus activities through a motivational concert performed by the National System of Children's and Youth Orchestras and Choirs of Zulia state. , for more than 300 children belonging to the region's communities.
This activity represented the project's first phase to motivate children and young people to join the Music Program, registering 280 children belonging to 9 communities of the Guajira subregion.
Additionally, we reported more than 100 children on the waiting list, demonstrating the high demand for our Program and the need for support to expand our reach.
This activity allowed us to formally register the Núcleo Wayuu Taya Intercultural Orchestra and Choir members to open the musical initiation classes.
STARTING MUSIC CLASSES
As part of the second phase of our Program, we are pleased to have started music classes in Mara in December 2022, with an enrollment of 280 children and adolescents, distributed between 122 Males and 158 Females, aged between 06 and 15 years old.
The expert teachers of El Sistema lead the musical training process supported by the values of inclusion, human development, and preservation of the language and the indigenous culture of the Wayuu people.
The children are organized in groups by age; this strategy facilitates the advancement in the identification of profiles, abilities, aptitudes, and motivations for the execution of specific instruments and choir. Classes are held twice a week. Transportation, hydration and snacks, teaching material, and paramedical support are provided to the Program members. They are achieving more than 20 class sessions without interruption, offering 5,600 snacks and more than 80 transportation routes.
ASSEMBLY OF THE FIRST CONCERT
After only four weeks of classes, in December, the children and youth of Núcleo Wayuu Taya presented their progress through their first concert, accompanied by a large group of parents, teachers, representatives of the National System of Children's and Youth Orchestras and Choirs and the media.
They presented samples of the orchestral initiation class, which is learning rhythm, musical figures, and group coordination, and then the presentation of the choral format with a repertoire of Christmas songs. The concert was a complete success.
The 280 members of the Wayuu Taya Nucleus demonstrated great discipline and love for music.
Despite significant socioeconomic limitations, results were obtained thanks to constant work, confirming a high commitment to the Program.
FIRST GREAT HALL CONCERT
On February 25, the Wayuu Taya chorus was invited to participate in the concert on the 48 Anniversary of the creation of El Sistema, held in the Aula Magna of the Rafael Urdaneta University, which has a capacity of more than 2,000 people.
The event was attended by almost 50 children and young people from the Wayuu indigenous communities, who, for the first time, interpreted the theme: "To the earth" written by Elva Bermúdez, Eloisa del Mar Arenas and music by Julio Morales.
The Direction was in charge of Maestro Rafael Patete, Director of the Zulia Symphonic Choir, in the company of the adult and youth choir.
Join us in our mission to empower and transform the lives of children and youth in the Guajira subregion through the power of music. Your support can help us expand our reach and preserve the rich indigenous culture of the Wayuu people. Together, we can make a real and lasting impact on the lives of these children and their communities. Please donate today and join our journey toward a brighter future.
We want to thank our allies, volunteers, and donors for their support and trust in our Program. With your help, we can create opportunities and hope for the region's children and youth and preserve the Wayuu people's cultural heritage. We look forward to continuing our work and making a difference in the lives of those we serve.
