The Wayuu Taya Foundation celebrates music as a universal language that connects cultures and transforms lives. Through our partnership with Venezuela's System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs (El Sistema), we continue to empower young people through the Wayuu Taya Intercultural Program.
Wayuu Taya Nucleus: Two Years of Musical Growth
On November 8, 2024, the Wayuu Taya Nucleus celebrated two years of music education for children from Mara communities. Each week, 260 children from La Popular, Las Atujas, La Repelona, and others travel to Tepichi Talatshi School for programs like Alma Llanera, Ancestral Music, Choir, and Orchestra. The arrival of new instruments has brought excitement and commitment, as shared by Calisa Amaya, a young violinist who expressed joy at being able to practice more consistently. Parents also contribute by volunteering, ensuring the children are well cared for.
The year-end concert on December 13, 2024, showcased each program's progress and highlighted the children's dedication and talent.
On January 13, children eagerly returned to their music studies, inspired by the past year's successes and excited for new opportunities to learn and grow. The start of this new chapter brings fresh melodies, deeper connections, and a strengthened commitment to the transformative power of music.
This program offers more than music lessons. Transportation, meals, and health support ensure every child has what they need to succeed.
Music Heals Program: Nurturing Talent and Hope
In November 2024, the Music Heals program introduced classical guitar classes at Tepichi Talashi School, culminating in a vibrant concert of parranda and aguinaldos on December 12 at Jesus Redentor Church in Tamare. February 2025 marked the start of a new term, with classes held at Apuna Farm and Tepichi Talashi School.
The program inspires 31 children to learn various instruments, including acoustic and electric guitar, drums, trumpet, Venezuelan cuatro, and popular singing. Music Heals offers more than lessons—hope, joy, and opportunity. New auditions will soon welcome more young musicians into this life-changing experience.
The Wayuu Taya Foundation remains committed to nurturing the dreams of young musicians. More stories of growth and success are on the horizon.
We thank maestros Yanina Albornoz and Rafael Patete for their dedication to our children's musical education.
We are also grateful to El Sistema, Music Heals International, the Giustra International Foundation, CORE Response, Acceso, and you, who make this work possible.
Thank you!
