From September 26-28, 2024, heavy rainfall triggered severe floods and landslides in Nepal, severely damaging WASH infrastructure in Bagmati, Koshi, and Madhesh provinces. The Nayabasti WASH project in Kavrepalanchok, aimed at providing safe drinking water, suffered catastrophic damage, including the destruction of its intake system, tapstands, and key water distribution structures.
The September 2024 floods in Nepal left 73 households (602 people) in Nayabasti without access to safe drinking water. Previously reliant on WASH infrastructure for clean water, the community now faces increased risks of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid. Residents are forced to use a temporary, potentially contaminated pipe system for essential needs, endangering vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
This projekt includes reconstructing the intake system, pipeline, slow sand filter, horizontal roughing filter, and community tapstands. The project will also engage the community in the rebuilding process and provide education on water conservation, hygiene, and infrastructure maintenance. These measures will ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving overall hygiene and sanitation.
The long-term impact of the project includes improved health and well-being for the Nayabasti community through access to clean, safe drinking water. Community education on hygiene and water conservation will promote long-term sustainability and resilience. By re-establishing essential infrastructur, the project strengthens the community's capacity to respond to future disasters, fostering lasting health, hygiene, and development benefits
