Lalika in her own vegetable field
Lalika in her own vegetable field

Born at Gorkha, Barpak-8, Lalika is the youngest daughter in a family after 6 elder sisters. She lost her father, Sompati  when she was just 18 months old. After the death of a husband, Hotani  raised 7 daughters on her own. Coming from a very ordinary family, Lalika couldn't get a lot of opportunities and which is why she couldn't continue her further studies after her secondary level at school and just completed SLC (School Leaving Certificate). Eventually, at the age of 16, she got married to Mr. Gopiram  and bore 2 daughters to date.
In 2015, when the massive Earthquake hit Nepal, Tewa initiated Hamro Tewa Gaun Ghar relief and Recovery program, also known as Shadow Barefoot Volunteers Program. Gorkha being the epicenter during the earthquake faced a lot of destruction and loss of property and human lives. Through Shadow Barefoot Volunteers program, Lalika got an opportunity to engage with our volunteers and to partake in a sewing and cutting training. After the training, she bought a sewing machine and started to transfer her skills into an income-generating process. She started by stitching old clothes in just NRs 10/- (USD 0.1) to sewing shirts, pants, and blouse. She took care of the expenses incurred on household, for the education of her children and also invested NRs 40,000/- (USD 400) from the savings she did per month i.e. she saves NRs 1,300/- (USD 13) per month. This training built her confidence and to which she also developed an entrepreneur skill. She started cultivating vegetables and did poultry farming in small scale at home. Lalika in collaboration with other 3 women of communities invested NRs 35,000/- (USD 350) in community vegetable farming. Lalika says," I used to plead other people for just NRs 1/- (USD 0.01) but now I can bear the expenses of my family and also have started to save money. I have never imagined that I would be able to do this much of progress in my life. I have become empowered and am able to put my thoughts in front of community people. I am very thankful to Tewa and sisters from Tewa who helped me come out of a shell and become the woman I have become today. "
