Project Report | Mar 3, 2025
Prevent overfishing

By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising intern

To our supporters,

Over the past five years, global fish populations have experienced significant declines in both numbers and species diversity. This downturn is largely attributed to illegal fishing practices and overfishing, leading to the degradation of marine habitats. Our project aims to empower local communities by providing training, resources, and equipment to monitor and preserve marine environments, thereby curbing illegal fishing activities.

To ensure sustainable fish stocks for future generations, it’s imperative to establish protected reef areas. These zones must be closed to fishing and shielded from destructive practices to serve as sanctuaries where marine life can thrive. Recent studies have highlighted alarming trends:

• In 2019, approximately 64.6% of global marine fish stocks were within biologically sustainable levels, indicating a continuous decline over time.

 • The Southeast Pacific has the highest percentage of fish stocks at biologically unsustainable levels (66.7%), followed by the Mediterranean and Black Seas (63.3%).

Our approach involves collaboration with local authorities and communities to:

1. Identify Critical Areas: Pinpoint ocean regions with critically low fish populations.

2. Community Training: Equip local residents with skills for data collection and environmental monitoring.

3. Outreach Programs: Partner with local organizations to raise awareness and provide alternative livelihoods for fishermen, reducing reliance on overfishing.

This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports the socio-economic well-being of coastal communities, ensuring a balanced and sustainable future for both people and marine ecosystems.Donate to save our oceans.
