Palliative care program launched by the Charity Fund «Tabletochki» in July 2015 is aimed to raise the quality of lives of terminally ill children and their parents.
In Ukrainian society the definition “palliative” is usually avoided by doctors, parents and the society as a whole. At the point where the doctors realise their inefficience in treating the child they let little patient and his/her family go home withoput providing any instruction how to take care of the palliative child. Meanwhile the Government doesnt provide any financial support to such families.
As a result the palliative family is being left alone, without savings and unable to buy even diapers, which makes the last few days/months of child’s life extremely uncomfortable. This problem is solved by our Palliative program. As a result, children spend their last days not in intensive care, but with their families – anesthetized, taken care of and in comfort.
At the moment the Fund provides help to 57 palliative families all over Ukraine.
In April we bought medicines, medical equipment and provided financial support to 15 families, which costed 2831 USD.
In May we bought medicines, medical equipment and provided financial support to 14 families for 950 USD.
In June we helped with buying medicines and providing financial support to 15 families, which costed 3356 USD.
Within these 3 months we bought the following medicines: Levacetam, Verospiron, Temodal, Mercaptopurinum, Posineg, Nifuroxazidum, Depakine, Nalbuphinum, Lamictal, Artelac, Saccharomyces boulardii, Vidisic,Trental, Ceraxon, Panangin, Quamatel, Vancomycinum, Colistin, Fluconazolum, Actovegin, Lasix, Ceruloplazmine etc.
The fund also purchased the following care products and consumables: syringes, non-sterile gloves, sanitation catheters, diapers, wet wipes, detergents, antiseptic, gauze bandages, urological pads, fonendoscope, measurer AT digital, catheters, tracheostomy tube, gastric probes, moist napkins, bandages, gloves, nutrition pediashur, heat-moisture exchanger for tracheostomy etc.
The salary to our doctor-consultants, helping our palliative families in April-June was 1981 USD.
However the Palliative care program not only aims to cover the expenses for the needed treatment. It also supports parents who lost their child to cancer by organizing psychological consultations.
In April our psychologists were helping 18 families to overcome their grief, in May they helped 17 families, in June – 17 families, which costed 635 USD.
