The Family Literacy Initiative program implementation at the community level (home school) made possible through the partnership of WE-CARE Foundation, Friends of Liberia and HIPPY International, continues to operate in the same four low-income communities of Duazon, Neezoe, Caldwell and WestPoint but with a 10% (from 180 to 195) increase in the number of families in year six 2021. FLI aim remains to give parents the tools (lesson) skills (activity) and confidence (assurance) to become their children first teachers in every aspect of their children lives and, increasing the literacy rate of family is an integral part of the process. FLI year six started its official implementation in early March and in May 2021 with its regular home visitations and interactions with the families.
Graduation ceremonies for children and families completing their third year were held the end of January 2022. With the completion of year five in January 2021, 157 children have completed the FLI program. In February 2022, the Family Literacy Initiative started its seventh year of offering the home visitor program in Neezor, West Point and Caldwell in Montserrado County, and Duazon in Margibi County. Recruitment and testing of all new incoming students has been completed and home visitors have begun their weekly visits. There are 202 families with 203 children in the program. In addition, the Adult Literacy Program, a component of the Family Literacy Initiative, has 57 adults recruited to being at the beginning of May. New this year is the addition of Peter Town as a Family Literacy site. Work has not yet started in Peter Town.
A tracking component has been added to the Family Literacy Initiative to enable WE-CARE to monitor how successful the program is doing in preparing children for public school. Please take an opportunity to read the attached report.
All of this is possible because of your support.
