Since the September 5, 2015 elections, the Legal Aid Program (LAP) in both Mohammedia and Boujdour has lots of good news to report! In said elections, voter turnout was 54%, up from 45% in the last election in 2011. Furthermore, 90% of communal representatives elected in the September elections are Civil Society Organizers in Mohammedia and Boujdour. In fact, 95% of the elected communal representatives in the Mohammedia commune of Ain Harrouda had participated in LAP meetings. As for Boujdour, a Moroccan Sahara community where High Atlas Foundation has recently started a LAP, these electoral successes give a lot of hope to CSOs invested in addressing topics such as security and rural poverty. The commitment of these communities to leading the way for human development and good governance in Morocco is evidenced by these elections and demonstrates a greater trust in their own government and place in democracy.
Aside from the elected positions that the LAP is making possible, CSOs and university students from Mohammedia are doing incredible work all around Morocco, working with various government branches to put into practice issues brought up in frequent roundtables and meetings. The 13 CSO-government partnerships that have been formed since July include an agreement with the Ministry of National Education for the integration of 45 children with Downs Syndrome into the school system, and partnering with the Delegation for Youth and Sport in order to train youth volunteers to run future summer camps for area children. Additionally, seeing the success of the Mohammedia and Boujdour programs, HAF has signed an agreement with Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fes to open its second Community Center at the university, which will serve over 200 university students, as well as 50 CSOs in surrounding villages. Moving forward, in Fes and beyond, HAF looks forward to facilitating dialogue and action with students and CSOs looking to address pressing local issues in human development.
