Women in remote villages in Northern India are growing more than nutritious fruits and vegetables for their families – they are also increasing their confidence and building community connections because of their organic kitchen gardens.
Traditionally, women shared gardening know-how and surplus vegetables with their neighbors. But recently, this collaboration has faded and, in some communities, has nearly been lost.
So when our field team observed a resurgence of collaboration and trade among women participating in Karuna-Shechen’s Kitchen Gardens program, they quickly recognized the importance. Women are gaining a sense of accomplishment and pride by sharing food they have grown with their neighbors, and in doing so, they are strengthening relationships and creating more opportunities for connection and collaboration.
“It’s helping to preserve an important cultural heritage,” says our India Director, Shamsul Akhtar.
Together, we are supporting and empowering under-served village women with sustainable skills to nourish their families and strengthen their communities.
From all of us at Karuna-Shechen, we thank you for reaching out across the globe to support our project — a perfect example of compassion in action.
