CPP: Producing other than plaintain

By Marie Marthe Saint Cyr | Executive Director

CPP gardens post Hurricane Mathew
CPP gardens post Hurricane Mathew

When the soil of the Center for Plantain Production begins to show deficiencies to keep the level of production for plantain to the quantity and quality expected, the soil had to be replenished. For that it meant to produce food staples that will replenish the needed elements and within a couple of years the soil will be ready for new plantain; or keep the soil vacant so it replenish naturally.

The choice for the farmers involved with the plaintain production is to plant other food produce.  For the harvest of the last 10 months, they chose to plant Kalalou (Okra), tomatoes, beans.  They have harvested all three products and they went to local vendors, local markets and retailers, providing needed foods for the local market..

We particularly were eager to market these productions post Hurricane Mathew when there were some scarcity of fresh production given the devastation that the whole south and the northwest suffered. Rural families eating is based on the local production given the price of imported goods from urban centers to rural areas is prohibitive.

CPP's production of okra, tomatoes and beans hit the martket when it was needed most during a post hurricane where erosion, debris and damage to the gardens were predominant and supplies were scarce.

This is only one manner of response in a high need timeLambi supported milling, through the repair and reconstruction of mills that is in progress at this time and the repair of 7 Oxplowing services in the main South.  All these damages were done by Hurricane Mathews.  While the world of people in Texas, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and other islands in the Caribbean suffered great damage by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, we are still recovering from Mathew in 2016 and pray for the rest of the season to be more clement.

Thank you so much for your support and we hope that you will continue to help us plant and produce the food to feed local needs while support local initiative for sustainable agriculture.
