SEED Madagascar continues its efforts to improve education and health outcomes through the construction of Antahovary Primary School as part of Programme Sekoly. The project aims to build a fully furnished three-classroom school, five gender-segregated latrines, a menstrual hygiene facility, and a rainwater harvesting system. These improvements address the urgent needs caused by the destruction of the previous school by fire in January 2021, which left 150 students learning in inadequate conditions.
Pre-project activities for Antahovary Primary School are set to begin in October 2024, with full construction scheduled for November 2024. This includes the integration of the Sekoly Maintso (“Green Schools” in Malagasy) tree-planting site to offset carbon emissions and the installation of a solar energy system as part of Project Masoandro. These initiatives reflect SEED's commitment to sustainability while providing infrastructure improvements.
This project will not only benefits students at Antahovary Primary School but also empower the community. Partnering with Jiro-VE, a Madagascar-based social enterprise, SEED Madagascar is installing a 1200-watt solar system and a light library at the school. This solution will charge 96 portable power banks per day, providing clean, affordable energy for both the school and the community, reducing reliance on harmful kerosene lamps.
Additionally, a community-managed tree planting site will offset construction-related carbon emissions. After five years, these trees will be available for community use, with replanting efforts ensuring sustainability for the long term. This holistic approach supports education and environmental sustainability, fostering resilience and resource availability for the future.
With construction due to start this November, any and all donations are appreciated. The Programme Sekoly team is greatly appreciative of the generosity of all donors thus far.
