Entering the new year in 2025, the construction of the primary school in Antahovary is finally kicking off. The construction activities have officially begun after the groundbreaking ceremony that was held in December 2024. The latrine pits are being dug, and breezeblock building and rock-breaking are progressing steadily. This marks the start of this project where it is predicted to promote safe learning environments for around 150 students and five teachers in EPP Antavohary.
In response to widespread cyclone damage to schools in southeast Madagascar in early 2022, the design of the new school building includes cyclone-resistant features. The roof and classrooms will be reinforced to withstand adverse weather conditions, to ensure the school's resilience in the face of future cyclones.
Aside from the construction and repairs of the school infrastructures, this project also aims to improve access and facilities to WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) that will contribute to better health and sanitation for the community.
SEED will facilitate the installation of a 10,000-litre capacity rainwater harvesting system at Antahovary Primary School. When full, this system will provide two months’ worth of clean drinking water without the need for replenishment. The rainwater harvesting system will also supply running water to the handwashing stations and the Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) facility, which will ensure access to an onsite water source for both students and teachers.
By contributing to SDG goals 4 (quality education) and 6 (clean water and sanitation), the project aims to create lasting improvements in both education and sanitation. The Programme Sekoly team is greatly appreciative of the generosity of all donors thus far.
