The twin sisters

By Trudy Bekker | director

The twins when they graduated
The twins when they graduated

Today we are pleased to share the following story with you from a very special twin:

I, Evelin, was born in June 2017 with my twin sister Elainne. We are the only children of my father and mother.
Growing up we developed a condition called Autism Spectrum Disorder.
At the end of 2021, our mother was becoming quite desperate with the two of us giving her little rest. Because we were constantly moving and we didn't pay much attention to her. Each one doing what we wanted.  Then she learned about the work of the Fundación Cuidado Infantil Dominicano and decided to sign us up for their home visiting program.

We were already 4 years and 4 months old, but we still used pampers, we left everything lying around, I didn't pay attention to anything, but Elainne did a little. The only words we said were water and milk.
Auntie Adalgisa started to visit us weekly and after being in the program for 17 months, Elainne repeats everything she hears and I'm talking a lot more too.

Auntie Adalgisa taught mother Mother how to help us pay attention and help around the house, such as preparing the table to eat, organizing the bed and our clothes. We now also help with dishwashing, sweeping and other chores around the house.

With the help of  Auntie Adalgisa, my mother enrolled us in school. Mother still had to go with us at the beginning to show the teacher how to treat us firmly.  But we graduated to the next level at the end of the schoolyear!!

                                              *********************

We wish all children would have such a dedicated mother as the mother of these twins!!  She quickly learned how to manage them better  at home and spend many hours going to class with them!  But it has paid off!!

We would like to thank you for your continuous support of our work and wanted to give you a heads up for the next campaign that is coming up on November 28: Giving Tuesday.  There will be 1.2 million dollars available for matching grants!!

If you are planning to support us that day, kindly note the date down in your agenda!!  The children and families are counting on you!
