Meet the Project Rhino K9s

By Kira Macdougall | Project Rhino & African Conservation Trust

Dear GlobalGiving friends

A huge thank you once again for your incredible support in helping to keep the Project Rhino K9-Unit operating and effective. We couldn’t do it without you!

The K9-Unit is a recognised name in Zululand and we often get questions about the dogs and their specialities. So, for this term’s report, we have included a brief overview of the seven crime-fighting K9s and their applications:

K9: Maqwai

Application:  Detection (Rhino Horn-Ivory-Firearms)

Age: 2 Years

Zululand temperatures can soar upwards of 35 to 40 °C (90 – 104 °F) in summer which can make reactions and patrols incredibly tough, but the K9/handler teams haven’t let it stop them and supported in several areas, including:

  • Assisting at the scene and in the apprehension of suspects involved in two armed robberies (local clothing stores);
  • Numerous callouts from game reserves regarding tracking suspected poachers who had entered the reserves;
  • Assistance at the scene and tracking of suspects involved in meat poaching incidents;
  • Supporting a local police operation by successfully detecting a 4 kg shipment of illegal drugs;
  • Assisting in the pursuit of suspected hijackers and also in the recovery of a suspected hi-jacked vehicle;
  • Helping to locate a missing person and assisting in a police abduction case;
  • Conducting visible patrols and training exercises in different reserves – a total of 80 snares were successfully recovered in the three month period;
  • Providing support to local police and security companies in the apprehension of burglary suspects and assisting in tracking and detecting stolen goods – even our own Zululand anti-poaching hangar was robbed early this year! Fortunately, the K9-Unit was able to recover some of the items from the bushes.

In January, Global Conservation Force generously sponsored a two-day security training course for the K9-Unit Rangers. This vital training is designed to improve safety, movement, dangerous engagements and patrol strategies, which is so essential when faced with armed poaching gangs and other criminals.

The Unit also assisted the Anti-Poaching Association of Finland with a documentary on poaching – we look forward to seeing the team in action!
