Progress Report

By Annie Peatling | Funding & Reporting | Zululand Conservation Trust

Dear GlobalGiving Family,

We are pleased to share with you the latest progress report on our protected area expansion project, aimed at fulfilling our mission of conserving endangered species and their habitats while saving endangered spaces for future generations.

Our vision drives us to connect protected areas through community corridors, dismantling shared boundary fences to create regional connectivity and foster resilience in ecosystems. The expansion of protected areas not only facilitates genetic flow but also reduces the need for management intervention, allowing natural ecological processes to thrive once again.

In October, we reached a significant conservation milestone with the incorporation of 500 hectares of land into the custodian site of Manyoni. This achievement, following over two years of negotiations, was made possible through a lease agreement with the Mbulungwane Community Property Trust. Situated east of the reserve and nestled between the outer boundary fence and the N2 highway, this land presents a vital opportunity to integrate new black rhino genetics into the reserve. While our immediate goal is integration, the presence of an internal fence may persist temporarily.

Already, we have commenced clearing the property of alien invasive plants and maintaining the road network. Additionally, plans are underway to erect fencing along the N2 highway to ensure the safety and integrity of the expanded reserve.

Looking ahead, our focus remains on expanding protected areas, fostering partnerships, and conserving endangered species. As human encroachment threatens natural tracts of land, the urgency to safeguard these spaces becomes increasingly paramount. By connecting areas and preserving critical habitats, we can ensure the survival of endangered species and the ecosystems they depend on.

The motivation behind our efforts resonates deeply with our vision, and we are committed to realizing it with your generous support. Together, we can continue to make strides in protecting our natural heritage and securing a future where endangered spaces thrive.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication to conservation and look forward to achieving even greater milestones together.
