Project Report | Feb 7, 2020
The Marine Scholarship Program

By Luke Searle-Evans | Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

The last quarter has been very successful for fundraising. One of the biggest events we do here happened which was the Raft Race organised alongside our partners Seychelles National Park Authority (SNPA), this is when different companies and NGOs from around Seychelles build their own raft out of recyclable materials. The teams come down to the Marine National Park Baie Ternay, which is where our GVI base is and line up the rafts in the water, then race the 1.6km round trip. The winner gets a percentage of the funds raised. There was also a prize for the best fancy dress, best designed raft. The rest of the funds raised went to Presidents Village which is an organisation GVI used to work very closely with before 2019. This day event was definitely a highlight of the last 3 months, all our volunteers got involved and we had 2 rafts in the race while all the staff members helped organise the day.

It is a state run program so all their day to day needs are funded for but around Christmas with children that have no family and nowhere else to go it’s nice to have something a little special.

We have a new and exciting charitable trust project organised for 2020 which we can’t wait to start fundraising for. It’s called the Marine National Scholarship Program. This is a program for 18-25 year old Seychellois who are interested in the marine sector. It helps give them vital training for diving qualifications which will help increase their opportunities for future employment and further education. We work with other NGOs to provide hands on experience in research and conservation including coral reef, turtle and shark monitoring, project management and science communication training. This is a really important project because diving is expensive and the Marine Scholarship Program gives Seychellois opportunities they might not have gotten. Then in the future more people will be able to help conserve the marine environment which Seychelles as a country relies heavily on.

For the future efforts from donors to help support this project is getting the word out on all things social media. We have our Facebook page GVI Seychelles Mahe which we have already shared our charitable project donation link on and information about our upcoming charitable event happening on the 23rd February. It’s the Eco-Friendly Marathon, where our volunteers will be running 5km, 10km, half and full marathon. Currently it has only reached 596 people, we need there to be more platforms and more people sharing the link and all we hope to achieve.

2019 ended on a high with the Raft race but we are looking forward to our future project and the fundraising events we hope to make a lot of money from. The Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon happening on the 23rd of February which we all need to start training for as well as getting in the donations!

Thank you so much for all you’ve donated, hope to get your future support in 2020!

With Gratitude,

Cap Ternay Marine
