Project Ala has made incredible strides in protecting Madagascar’s lemur habitat, from pioneering conservation efforts to facing unexpected challenges head-on.
This past September, SEED staff completed a three-day leadership training with ten Ala community fire agents, strengthening their role in protecting the forest. In October, SEED brought together 35 forest management representatives from six Mahatalaky communities to tackle threats like fire. Additionally, in November, the Ala team expanded outreach by visiting Belavenoky for the first time to discuss conservation efforts.
A major milestone was reached in October when camera traps captured the first-ever sighting of a nocturnal lemur (Cheirogaleus major) using the corridors! Conservation work also progressed with 2,800 corridor Acacia trees ringbarked to reduce competition with native species, while watering and manure applications supported growth.
However, in early January, devastating wildfires swept through Sainte Luce, indering our progress significantly. While Acacia in Corridors 1, 3, and 4 were mostly unaffected, 85% of native seedlings were lost. Corridors 2 and 5 suffered even greater damage, with all native seedlings and much of the Acacia destroyed. Despite this setback, signs of regeneration are already visible, and we’re doubling efforts—intensifying seedling collection and planning for replanting in March. A more detailed outline of the current state of our projects following the fires is available here.
Your support makes this work possible. With resilience and determination, we remain committed to restoring these critical habitats. Thank you for standing with us in protecting Madagascar’s forests.
