WHY GIRLS’ EDUCATION MATTERS.
We have a situation on our hands!
130 million girls worldwide did not go to school today. Not because they didn’t want to, but for various reasons they were unable. Education is a universal right. It is also a matter of justice.
When I think of those numbers its almost unfathomable to think that we could ever get all those girls in to school... but we cannot become overwhelmed.. At AusCam we have always concentrated on the one before us and we will continue to do this currently in Cambodia.. but our mission is to be the voice and the enabler for as many girls as we can possibly help - Today Cambodia – then hopefully the world! We are only able to do this because you care and you lift your voice as an advocate for girls' with us through your generous donations.
Education changes everything!
There are numerous studies that have demonstrated that educating women and girls is the single most effective strategy to ensure the well-being and health of children and the long term success of developing economies.
Education empowers women to overcome discrimination. Girls and young women who are educated have greater awareness of their rights and greater confidence and freedom to make decisions that affect their lives, improve their health and boost their work prospects.
Education never occurs in a vacuum. In developing countries it occurs in a dynamic of poverty, gender discrimination and cultural practice. We ensure girls not only attend school and receive a quality education but develop the skills and tools to be able to deal with life's challenges along their journey by addressing issues such as trafficking, child marriage, child labour and violence along with our personal development, life skills and leadership workshops. Empowering girls through education.
She can change the world!
For a girl like Rothana, growing up in poverty and the prospect of dropping out of school was devastating for her. But when she met the AusCam social worker at her school, her dreams began to materialise. With an AusCam Education Scholarship and holistic support Rothana was able to remain in school and graduate her grade 12 certificate this year. But… not only did she graduate, she topped the nation with 100%. We are beyond proud of her courage, resilience and determination! Rothana has now received a full university scholarship to study medicine and become a doctor.
We are also very excited to announce the launch of our new documentary Sophea:Changing Her World. In 2015, we introduced you to Sophea, one of the original recipients of a scholarship in the documentary Sophea's Dream. This is her continuing story and the impact AusCam is having on adolescent girls from impoverished families in the Cambodian Capital, Phnom Penh. We would love to know what you think..
Poverty should never determine a future.
Thank you for believing in our vision.
