Over the summer, I have been meeting regularly with the Trustee team to reflect on our April trip to Mexico and work on our plans and vision for the future. You can read more about our trip in our previous newsletter. Looking back, we achieved an incredible amount and it was fantastic to have volunteers such as Ella Mencel out there with us. Ella is a Clinical Scientist in the National Health Service in the UK, specialising her training in Rehabilitation Engineering. She has a passion for posture care and wheelchair provision and her skills were very much appreciated and put to great use at our Postural Management Clinic in Puerto Vallarta. Ella volunteered with us for a month and below is her own summary of her experience. ‘My time with Therapies Unite was very busy but rewarding, assisting in assessments for equipment, setting up and handing over equipment, as well as maintenance and repairs and a general stock over-hall. There were multiple factors which made wheelchair provision more complex than what I am used to in the UK. Firstly, I was limited by the equipment that had been donated. None of the wheelchairs were a perfect fit and required multiple adjustments and the use of extra foam to fill space. Secondly, the equipment had to be suitable for the user’s environment, such as having solid tyres, being foldable and also small in size to fit into their home. My trip to Mexico with Therapies Unite has provided me with invaluable knowledge about rehabilitation therapy in a low resource country. Therapies Unite is a fantastic charity with lots of potential to grow within the community it is based and I am very excited to see how the service develops.’ Ella’s experience reflects the thoughts of our Trustee team, in that our focus needs to move towards purchasing made-to-measure equipment in-country from local manufacturers rather than our current model of importing donated equipment from the UK. Not only does this provide our service users with properly fitting equipment without the need for time consuming and sometimes also costly alterations, but also means equipment can be selected based on the persons environmental and social needs alongside their clinical needs. This level of holistic care is something we really strive to provide and will have a huge impact on the quality of life of our service users. They will be able to access public transport more easily, opening up new work opportunities, leisure activities and appropriate schooling. Currently, many of our children do not attend school due to transport and mobility problems, limiting their future opportunities. Over the past few months I have been meeting with local and global manufacturers and providers, including major wheelchair service providers in the UK. We are putting together a plan to make our vision a reality, starting with the upskilling of our local team, providing advanced level training in wheelchair provision and posture management to further develop their skills and to attain the status of ‘Approved Provider’ from the World Health Organisation. This status opens many doors to sourcing new made-to-measure equipment at low cost, allowing us to move away from the donations model that we currently use. We are also seeking ongoing support from large UK and international providers for peer support, guidance and further training for our team in the long term. All of our plans come with a cost attached and this is where you, the donors, can get involved. Could you support wheelchair users in Puerto Vallarta by making a monthly donation to our project? A donation of just $30 a month would cover the costs of repair work for one wheelchair each month, getting one of our service users back out into their workplace, school or sports club. Your donations really do change lives and we thank you for your continued support.
