We have known Hannah since she was 4 years old. She is a very clever, sweet and shy little girl. She has a condition called Spina Bifida. As a result, she is unable to use her legs or mobilise without the use of specialist equipment. Hannah is one of many disabled children in Mexico who are unable to access the essential therapy and equipment they require.
Hannah was carried everywhere by her Mum as they did not have access to a wheelchair. This limited her ability to go out with her family, play with her sisters outside and go to school. In addition to a wheelchair, Hannah also required some new callipers to help her stand and a standing frame. She was assessed in our posture clinic by our team and provided with various different pieces of specialist equipment that she needed.
We were able to give her a self-propel wheelchair, re-mould her callipers to the correct height and make her a standing frame using the Advanced Paper Technology APT (entirely made out of cardboard!). APT is an excellent way to make specialist equipment from cheap, locally sourced materials. The equipment can be painted to the individuals tastes (Hannah wanted it pink and purple!) and is extremely durable and portable.
With the new equipment, Hannah is able to be independent for the first time in her life, no longer needing to rely on her Mum to carry her. Her standing frame and adjusted callipers enable her stand up which has a huge impact on her physical, mental and social development.
There are too many children like Hannah who do not have access to the essential equipment they so desperately need. We are fighting to change this. Please support us today so that we can continue to make a difference for children like Hannah.
Thank you for your support
