In this final report, we are excited to share another update and announce a special new collaboration. As many of you know, this project received one of the four grants awarded to projects in the DR Congo through GlobalGiving's Hope in Crisis Fund earlier this year. The grant included funding for the growing humanitarian crisis in the refugee camps near Goma and our ongoing work focused on community building and vocational skills for former child soldiers.
One of the core community projects supported by this page is the vegetable garden project, which aims to promote skills development and an understanding of vegetable crops. The project brings together youth and women, working side by side. The initial focus of the project was on cultivating potatoes due to their quick growth and abundant yield. The garden will be able to grow at least three crops throughout the year, with the surplus potatoes being distributed to those in the refugee camps. The project engaged a total of 35 individuals, including 15 youth and 20 women, who learned techniques such as crop rotation, planting methods, crop care, and post-harvest management. Additional learning activities covered savings, budgeting, and planning, as the surplus harvest would be sold in local markets. The community garden program fostered collaboration, understanding, and camaraderie among the participants.
Through the additional funding received by the Hope in Crisis Fund, this project is now fully funded. While we close this project page, our Kenya, United States and Amazon pages remain active.
Our support for the DR Congo and Remember Youth for Change continues in a new way and we are pleased to share a special announcement with our supporters. The tailoring program, part of this project, will be embarking on an exciting collaboration with a London-based designer starting in August. The program participants will have the opportunity to explore their creativity and enhance their skills by creating and sewing their own original designs. This collaboration will result in a capsule collection that showcases the participants' interpretations of the overarching themes of peace, unity, and hope. The announcements and updates regarding this project will be made through the BBS Facebook page. This new initiative is a direct outcome of your support, enabling us to provide a unique experience to the youth in the tailoring program.
As we conclude this project, we express our gratitude to all our supporters for their unwavering commitment and belief in our work. Through your support, we have been able to address critical issues, provide humanitarian assistance, and empower communities in the DR Congo. While this project page comes to a close, our dedication to creating a positive and lasting impact remains steadfast.
We look forward to continuing our efforts and exploring new avenues to uplift communities in need.
