Peace Winds Japan has been providing emergency assistance to the people of Inhambane Province who were affected by Cyclone Freddy in February and March 2023.
The cyclone had a devastating impact on many people’s lives and we would like to share with you the story of one of them, Marcella, from Villanculo County, Inhambane Province
“I have a husband and three small children. Our house was flooded by Cyclone Freddy. Three years ago we bought this land and built our house here. When we bought the lot, neither my husband nor I nor any of our neighbors knew that this was a high flood risk area. We have not heard any reports of flooding in the past around here, either. I am very shocked to see this situation now.”
“That day, the rain never stopped and in 24 hours it rained about 200 mm. As water gradually began to enter the house, we decided to pack up our valuables, but while we went to call the children, the amount of water quickly increased and we were unable to get our valuables out of the house.”
“Somehow we were able to take out only the children and a few blankets.”
“My house is 5 meters high, but the water reached 2.5 meters high. Food, clothes, appliances, almost everything was ruined.”
“On that day, I slept under a tree and waited for the water level to go down so I could go back to my house. About three weeks after the disaster, the water still hadn't subsided, so now I am staying at a friend's house. There are other families in the same situation as mine."
Peace Winds Japan distributed one month's worth of food to victims who were unable to return to their original homes.
People who received the food said they really needed the supplies because the cyclone had left them with nothing.
In addition, in flooded areas, sanitary conditions are poor and the risk of contracting infectious diseases such as cholera has increased. In fact, in Govuro District, Inhambane Province, cholera infection spread after the disaster, killing eight people.
Even today. sanitary conditions are still poor. We would like to ask for your warm support and cooperation to continue our assistance to the cyclone victims.
