Mozambique has been hit by several cyclones every year during the rainy season. In the Cabo Delgado Province where Peace Winds Japan has continued for humanitarian aid work, in addition to the cyclone, citizens and government forces have been repeatedly attacked by non-governmental armed groups since 2017, and this causes conflicts and over 600,000 people are evacuated.
On 15 December, 2024, the northern part of this vulnerable area was hit by another cyclone called Chido, which caused enormous damage. In Cabo Delgado, we heard the unforgettable report that "the percentage of houses damaged is 100%". Many houses have not been repaired yet.
In addition to houses, a lot of health facilities and water facilities which are essential for living people were destroyed. Most of the roofs of the affected health facilities have been blown away by the strong wind. Tents for temporary infirmaries have been set up with poor ventilation in the hot weather and the floor is covered with sand. It is a tough situation for unwell patients. Damage to the water supply system has resulted in a lack of clean water and this situation is continuing at this time.
Peace Winds Japan is still committing to the urgent rehabilitation of health facilities and water supply systems for the local people and the area affected by Chido, using our experience from other cyclone relief efforts.
It is recognised that the recurrence of cyclones in recent years is caused by climate change and that Africa is the most affected place. How many people around you know the shocking news that "the percentage of houses damaged is 100%" has been reported? Climate change is not "a story from a far country". It is "a problem for us: global citizens". While several funds have been reducing their funds for humanitarian sector, people in need live their lives to the fullest for the better future. If you are willing to support them with the little help, why don't you think about the humanitarian crisis caused by climate change and take a next action for it?
