Dear Supporters,
During the last few months we have worked on three main projects in order to preserve water sources or to improve the ones around the Piuray-Ccorimarca basin. A group of 16 volunteers worked for 5 weeks on the fencing of the Media Luna Wetland at Valle Chosica community.
The Media Luna Wetland is a very important resource for the Valle Chosica community, unfortunately was full of contaminated material that was leaving with no oxygen the area. Also this resource is being used for agriculture and cattle raising, leading to a full vicious circle of contamination for the whole community. GVI worked tiresly in order to fence the wetland so the animals will not pass that easily to use the water, now they only used it near the three doors, also volunteers clean up as much algae possible, this will lead more room for oxygen on the wetland.
At the Pongobamba School, volunteers built a greenhouse and helped with the improvement of terraces. The greenhouse will function as a centre of knowledge with a focus on environmental education and preservation of water. The main idea is to start planting native plants that will preserve more water for the environment and start decreasing the planting of exotic plants such as eucalyptus that is detrimental for the environment on Chinchero.
We have continued the work at Pongobamba School with environmental education, bringing more workshops to children and teaching them about the importance of their resources around their communities. They have learnt about compost, differences between organic and inorganic and how to begin the work at their greenhouse.
We have also supported a tree nursery at Valle Chosica community. Tree nursery help getting plants to grow until they are ready to go the mountains and start forestating all this community. As well as in Pongobamba, the idea is to start planting native plants and plants that can potentially add on the water resources. Native plants help with regulating the winds, weather and improving the overall environment of this area. This is a great resource to manage water sources.
We will continue to work with the outcomes of these projects in order to continue our objective of the full preservation of the whole Piuray-CCorimarca microbasin.
Thank you all for your continued support!
