HROC Workshop (Febuary22-24, 2021)
Facilitators: MISAGO Gisele and HORANIMANA Grace
Testimony
“I still remember as if I was raped yesterday. I was innocent, kind, virgin and a well-educated daughter that was raised by a strict mom.
One day, I was with my friends. We came from school, and then we met with a respected man. He hugged me like someone who knew me and he told me that he has something that my brother who lives in Bujumbura sent that I can go and take. Without any reflection, I followed him and he told me to pass by a bar to take something to drink.
I remember that he gave me a Fanta and I woke up at 2 am in the room that I didn’t know covered by blood. I was very traumatized and started shouting loudly. The people came and the police got this man. What made my trauma worse was my family; as we saw in this workshop, they did not listen to me well. They believed the rumours, nobody wanted to understand me.
They beat me several times. When my brothers came back from Bujumbura they also beat me nearly to death. There were sessions of being beaten. People who came from church or market took pleasure in looking at how I was beaten.
They used to speak to me hurtful words. My mother cursed me. She refused me to study and I became a slave in my own family. Society and family discriminated against me. I explained what happened in justice and the man was punished with 25 years in prison, but my family did not believe in me. I had young men who wanted to marry me but my mother told them my story and they rejected me.
I finally made the decision to leave everything and go to the place where no one knows me. I took refuge in Rumonge Province. There, I found a husband who loves me but my heart continues to bleed. I lost my studies and my family, even my mother does not know my child.
Yesterday, when you listened to me I felt free from this stone that was in my heart”.
