Dear Friends of Association Saint Camille,
There has been so much exciting news that we are providing an interim report!
On May 21, 2022 Gregoire Ahongbonon received the 2022 American Psychiatric Association (APA) Dr. Chester M. Pierce Human Rights Award. His work freeing the mentally ill from chains for 30 years was recognized for the first time by a US-based organization. The Human Rights Award was renamed to honor the memory of Dr. Pierce, a visionary leader in global mental health and Gregoire was the first recipient under his name. He gave a stirring lecture challenging all of us to help stop the human rights abuses of the mentally ill in West Africa.
Association Saint Camille (ASC), along with university psychologists in Benin, is hosting a scientific conference on the topic of mental health treatment in West Africa Dec 6-9, 2022 in Cotonou.
In February 2022 a new ASC center opened in Chad!
A residential program for children ages 8 - 18 is planned in Benin. The land and architectural plans have been secured. The next task will be to fund the building and to staff the program.
Land has also been promised in Nigeria. More to come on these developments.
The first Addiction Center in West Africa is planned to open in 2023 - no precise date yet.
We have launched a new project on GlobalGiving at Gregoire's request in Togo to fund a well. Project #56074.
Sourcing modern medications at an affordable price remains a challenge but we are undaunted! Potential new contacts were made at the APA meeting. Networking is everything!
Your gifts, care, and attention are very much appreciated.
Jocelyn
