After the amazing in person Fall Season tournaments we started organising our next events in the academic year plan and we had an incredible success with all the Spring tournaments!
On February 11th and 12th, 2023, The BEST Foundation held its 50th tournament in 97th School “Bratya Miladinovi” in Sofia - BEST Spring West Tournament. As always, competitors took part in five events: World Schools Style debate, poetry and prose interpretation, duo interpretation, and original oratory. We broke our record again- we had 242 high school students participating in our third competition of the season, representing 19 schools from 12 cities across West Bulgaria. We were impressed with all our students’ creativity, hard work and talent. 56 judges participated in the tournament and supported the students with their constructive feedback and ranking.
This year a record number of students have competed in the debate category, with 37 debate teams taking part in Spring West, with 17 novice and 20 varsity teams. We own this increased engagement to all the various activities the Foundation has been running, including our Debate Summer Camp and various online seminars.
Volunteer judge Miko Dimov from Blagoevgrad said: “It has been 10 years since I judged or debated and it was such a pleasure to participate and feel the debating buzz again- congrats to all competitors and keep at it”
On February 25th and 26th, 2023, BEST organised its 51st tournament in the High School of Mathematics “Petar Beron” in Varna. 238 high school students participated in our fourth competition of the season, representing schools from eastern Bulgaria. 21 schools took part in the tournament and all of the students, coaches and judges were extremely happy with its smooth organisation. 60 judges were assessing students’ creativity and public speaking skills.
From the 17th to the 19th of March 2023, the BEST Foundation in conjunction with American University in Blagoevgad hosted its 5th International Tournament, Balkan Voices. This event is the biggest international oratory competition on the Balkan peninsula. 65 high school students from all over the Balkans attended it. Participants came from Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Romania. The tournament was held in the campus of AUBG in Blagoevgrad and students managed to form bonds with their peers from neighbouring countries and foster important cross-cultural relationships. It was our first-time hosting Balkan Voices in person since 2019 and we are happy to announce that due to our judges, participants and volunteers’ unwavering efforts, the event was a resounding success. 29 volunteer judges evaluated students’ performance.
We are sharing with you some positive feedback that we received from the participants:
"It was a great experience that united us and expanded my horizons on different Balkan experiences. I was glad to learn so much from others and break some stereotypes that we might have”.
"I loved the inclusive and safe environment".
"The program was excellent and entertaining."
We are happy to share with you the below pictures from our events.
We thank you again for all your support and never forget that you are our angels!
