After a busy day of studying, it’s good to take a break and read a book. 13 Schools collected their first pack of reading books for the classes for the Deaf earlier this year. It’s not easy for deaf children to learn to read and it is hard for many to understand new concepts in textbooks if they have never heard of, seen nor experienced what is being described. Books with illustrations are helpful for deaf children especially for younger children who are still developing their language skills.
Reading books are not readily available to many rural schools and families in Zimbabwe; so, it’s special when there are enough for more than one each! At Makwasa Primary School the children are learning about caring for the books they borrow. The older children like the books on technology, the younger children enjoy the story books. At Manzinde Primary School the children had a joyful time exploring new worlds and cultures from the vibrant pictures and easy language.
