Social Reconstruction of Habitat in Oaxaca

Kitchens, ovens and comixcales in 6 communities
Kitchens, ovens and comixcales in 6 communities

The Comprehensive and Social Reconstruction of Habitat Project in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, continues to involve people from more communities, with the aim of improving their habitability and reducing their vulnerability to earthquakes and strong winds in the region, as well as to promote the recovery of the economy and local production. We have been working in Ixtepec, Niltepec, Xadani, Chihuitán, San Francisco del Mar, Unión Hidalgo, San Mateo del Mar and recently in La Blanca, at the municipality of Santo Domingo Ingenio.

Kitchens, ovens and comixcales

As of November 5, 2019, we have finished 38 kitchens of bajareque cerén: 18 in Ixtepec, 16 Niltepec, 1 in San Mateo del Mar and 1 in La Blanca.

During the last quarter we started working in La Blanca with the construction of the project’s eighth school-kitchen, through which the community was able to learn about the model proposed by Cooperación Comunitaria. This school-kitchen adds up to the other 7 previously built.

During this period, two evaluations took place in Ixtepec and La Blanca about the processes in the last school-kitchens developed, with the purpose of getting feedback and solving doubts of the participants, to make the necessary adaptations during the following constructive process, and in the space of the kitchens that will be built subsequently.

All of this adds to the 27 bread ovens built in Ixtepec and the 173 comixcales built in Ixtepec, Chihuitán, Niltepec and Xadani.

Traditional istmeña houses

Until today we have concluded 62 houses in Ixtepec. At the same time we have given various workshops to the communities regarding risk management, social production of habitat, the right to adequate housing, maintenance of housing, and about the importance of using local materials; with the objective of increasing their constructive capacities and strengthening their resilience and self-sufficiency.

Sociedad Ganadera of Ixtepec

In this quarter we also concluded the construction of the headquarters of the Sociedad Ganadera of Ixtepec. This is the result of a participatory design work with the members of its assembly, in collaboration with the Comité Ixtepecano para la Defensa de la Vida y el Territorio (Ixtepecan Committee for the Defense of Life and the Territory). We also continue working in the participatory design, structural analysis, executive project and budget to restore and reinforce the building of the Sociedad Agrícola of Ixtepec.

Feedback and environmental projects

In the last few months we have strengthened the closure of feedback loops by systematizing the information gathered through diagnoses, evaluations, interviews, workshops, among other methods, and by socializing this with different actors related to Cooperación Comunitaria: the communities in Oaxaca, donors, networks of similar organizations, and general public interested in themes such as social production of habitat, traditional knowledge, defense of the territory, and human rights related to the habitat.
