New Focus for Reef Check Malaysia: Seagrass Ecosystems Monitoring

Say hello to our newest project location!  Reef Check Malaysia recently began working in a new area in the Mersing group of Islands. This effort is to expand our work scope, to include seagrass monitoring, among other efforts, which is in line with RCM’s recent shift in our focus.

To kick off this new project, our colleagues conducted two separate meetings with two schools to discuss the proposed school awareness programme and activities for the year. Representatives from our partners, sponsors, and government agencies also attended these meetings. We then conducted two indoor awareness programmes with these schools, involving a total of 202 students, following which was another program with one of our partners. This session covered basic knowledge and understanding of mangroves, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems, as well as a discussion on the roles of corporations and industries in protecting and preserving the environment.

Together with six volunteers from one of our partners, we began our first quarterly seagrass monitoring program at Tanjung Kopok in Mersing, Johor. This will be an ongoing initiative to observe the changes in seagrass cover near the Johor rives, which is part of our long-term seagrass conservation programme in southern Johor. The volunteers were also taken on an educational boat tour to explore uniqueness of the mangrove forest found along the Johor River and its significance to the local marine habitat and community livelihood.

RCM emphasises working with all stakeholders, including government agencies at our project locations. Our team in Johor also engaged with representatives from the local town council to introduce our ongoing marine conservation programme in the area and discuss potential environmental programmes that can be conducted together. This is also part of our efforts to increase local community awareness of seagrass and mangrove ecosystem found along the Johor River.
