I Live Again Uganda regularly provides Group Trauma Counseling Programs at one of the refugee settlements in Uganda. Each participant is encouraged to voluntarily share their story with the group as way of releasing the pain and trauma. For those who are not comfortable sharing their story with the group, they are welcomed to share with one of our team members. Cindy chose to rise up infront the group and share her story. Here is what she shared:
"I grew up and lived with my husband in South Sudan and we had a five children. We both worked hard to care for our children.
One evening, my husband had gone out. He was met by the rebels, tied up and killed. I had asked my son to go out and collect some firewoord for the family. He found his Father's body lying on the ground in the bush. It was an extremely challenging time for me and my children. Life became very hard for us.
Then, one of my son's had gotten married. When my daughter in law went into labor, we all encouraged her and her husband (my son) to get on a motorbike and get to the hospital quickly. They did. But on the way to the hospital, they were surrounded by rebels. Each one was shot and killed that day.
We couldn't take it anymore after these incidents. We had to leave our home and come here to Uganda for safety.
With all that I have passed through, the death of my son and my husband, I just wanted to give up on life. I felt like no one could understand what I have passed through. I thought I was the only one with a problem. But, as others stood up and shared their stories of what they have gone through, I realized that I am not the only one - I am not alone. The counseling program has given me courage. I've come to accept the past but I am now excited for what the future can bring!"
Right now, there are 1,582,076 refugees in Uganda. The numbers continue to rise.
With your partnership we are doing all that we can to alleviate the trauma that so many others like Cindy have experieneced.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
