"My grandmother and I started running for almost two days before getting to Ngomoromo which is in the border of Southern Sudan and Uganda..."
James - 18 years old.
"I came to Uganda in 2017. The war in southern Sudan became so intense. From Southern Sudan I used to live with my grandmother. So many bad things happened that forced us to leave our home. My Uncle was a businessman and lived with us too. One day the rebels came and pulled him out of the house. They took everything we had and they burned all of our homes. The commander of the rebels shouted,
'Kill them all!' My grandmother pleaded with the rebels to let us go. They did. But, they killed my Uncle. My grandmother and I started running for almost two days before getting to Ngomoromo which is in the border of Southern Sudan and Uganda. We were then first taken to Moyo by UNHCR then later brought to Palabek Refugee Camp.
In 2019, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was the only one with her and things were not easy. It was painful watching my grandmother suffer. My mother came from Juba to be with us and help - but it was too late. My Grandmother passed on. I thought my mother would fill the gap that my Grandmother left in my life, but a few weeks later, she abandoned me. She left me here with a stranger and things are not well at all.
Now, I Live Again Uganda has come. I'm so glad to be meeting them and with others my age for our programs. We share what we are going through and also have times of sports and games. I learnt how to overcome trauma. I now know how important it is to share things that are bothering me and also the importance of physical activity as therapy. I can honestly say that I am more hopeful now! I am going to study hard and become a doctor - that is my plan."
