Unity in Diversity! Report from Burundi arrived!

By Shingo Ogawa | Project Leader

On December 18, 2021, the 20th-anniversary event of Terra Renaissance "Unity in Diversity" was held. On the day of the event, trainees were also invited to attend and listen together to reports on Terra Renaissance's activities in other countries.

The trainees don't really understand the details because they don't know English, but it was very impressive to see how seriously they watched the video reports of graduates who became independent after receiving training. The most exciting moment was when the Lao team demonstrated Lao cuisine. Cheers and applause broke out, and one of the local staff was quite excited, saying, "We can find those ingredients also in Burundi!

After the online event, we asked trainees, “How was the event?” “Is there anyone who wants to speak?” Some of the trainees gave speeches, such as "I used to live on the streets, but I'm glad that I can do more things through the training (motorcycle maintenance class trainee)" and "I'm very happy because I didn't think I could receive this kind of support because of my disability (sewing class trainee).

At the end of the session, we also gave our messages. "Some of the Terra Renaissance graduates lost their arms and legs due to landmines, and some were forced to fight as child soldiers. But now, as we all saw in the video, many are now independent and able to earn an income on their own. "Each one of us has the power to create our own future" is the idea we cherish, and yes, every one of us in this room has the same power. Let's all keep up the good work!"

The vocational training started in mid-November, and the trainees are now working hard to acquire skills and knowledge. We will continue to give them the support they need to become self-reliant.
