Rescue 80 Second Hand Dogs from the Deep South

Engel is one of the “snow dogs” rescued from the freezing temperatures and snow in Memphis in February. He lived with three other dogs outside and their owner refused to bring them inside - even in the snowstorm. Engel's three family members - Harlow, Keilar, and Tapper were all adopted. Now its Engel's turn!Engel's a funny boy - he loves to play hard, but also wants to be a lap dog. He's lived outside his whole life, so he has been learning all about being an inside dog in his foster home. 

If you have a pup who needs a playmate, Engel is your guy! He's good with other dogs, people, and is incredibly smart. Engel enjoys hard chews such as water buffalo horns, but is gentle with soft toys, too. He carries his penguin around the way a retriever would. Engel is a 2 yr old male pit bull mix. He is heartworm positive, and is undergoing treatment, however, this does not deter him from finding the perfect home.  The costs of treatment will be covered by Paws New England.

 

Adoptable Spotlight: Georgi

Georgi was rescued from life on a chain after years of living outside in the elements. He had an amazing foster in Tennessee who helped him learn to trust and accept the love he never experienced before. A strong food drive helps with his training and he has already learned several basic commands with hand signs (sit, stay, hand-nose target, shake, go to your crate). 

Georgi is a wonderful mix breed dog who is deaf. This fact gives him superpowers: he does not get distracted by noisy neighbors, the barking of other dogs, or Fourth of July coming up? You guessed it - not a problem! As a result, he rarely barks and does not get distracted on walks by dogs barking from behind walls or fences. He loves to travel by car occasionally sitting up to gaze out at the countryside or sleeping in his crate. Training is straightforward as long as your hand signals are consistent.

However, his deafness does require a few accommodations:  1) use a gentle tap on his head or side to wake him or get his attention 2) we always keep him on a leash when outside so he cannot get lost and so we can be his ears to keep him safe from things he cannot hear like cars driving along the street 3) training relies on visual commands (not verbal commands)

Georgi is a very affectionate, calm, and quiet companion who loves getting pets, gives kisses in return and really wants to sit on your lap. He is always eager to please and easy to train. Much of the day he relaxes in his crate (loves his crate) or on his bed next to us, then occasionally will get up and patrol his home to see if he can find any treats we left out for him (intentional or not).

Adoptable Spotlight: Iggy & Pup

Iggy and Pup were rescued during our winter freeze efforts. Both were emaciated, chained out in the elements, and forgotten by their owner. They were so weak and sore, they had to be carried into their southern foster home after rescue. During their vet assessment, foreign objects were noted in Iggy’s stomach. He underwent surgery to remove what appeared to be copper piping. He is now recouped and healthy.

These two are truly best friends. They are never too far from each other and look to each other for support and confidence. We're committed to ensuring these two stay together.

Iggy is “super sweet”, per his foster! Iggy has only lived chained outside. He needs a home with someone committed to training and helping him learn to be an inside dog. He is eager to please and is treat motivated, great combo.

Little Pup has adapted to inside life easier than Iggy. Pup is an active young girl and rarely sits still! She is treat motivated, crate trained and her house training is going well. Pup is good on a leash and non reactive to dogs while walking.

These two best friends came from unimaginable environments and so deserve to know what it is like to be loving family members. With consistent training and their ability to rely on each other, this transition will be amazing to experience.
