Adolescents friendly services for Sept-Nov 2021

Child and Family Foundation Uganda (CFU) team is excited to share our quarterly report of supporting the health needs of 1000 adolescents in rural Kamuli Uganda at https://goto.gg/50405with support from GlobalGiving donors and supporters. Your donations have enabled us to conduct a number of activities in the Kamuli district Busoga region, Eastern Uganda.

Integrated outreaches

Different services were offered to the community with the objective to offer free medical assessment, health education, and promotion of sexual gender-based violence prevention.

Child days plus activities

In partnership with local government authorities in the Kamuli district, we were able to implement child day plus activities at Nawansaso Parish. Up to 35 adolescents HPV vaccine to prevent them from acquiring cervical cancer

Adolescent Family Care Groups (AFCGs)

Two AFCGs comprising 15 adolescents each were formed in our communities. These AFCGs have been trained on adolescent health and wellbeing education including but not limited to;

Taking iron and folic acid supplements improves adolescent iron status and reduce the risk of anemia
Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections (STDs and STIs)
Taking care of physical health through regular exercise and getting adequate sleep
Observation of personal hygiene e.g., bath regularly, keep your hair and nails short, trimming of pubic hair

Impact of our activities

In Kiganda zone, Kawempe division slum settlements, we met an adolescent mother who was a victim of Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) with a severely malnourished child of six months who could not even sit. Her spouse left the family with a rent bill of 6 months to clear and no job to earn a living. After interventions and with support from GlobalGiving CFU was able to offer nutrition services, rented a house for the mother, and helped her to start up a small-scale business. On follow-up, the baby’s nutrition status had improved after using the ready to use therapeutic feeds (RUTF) and the mother was also linked to a counselor at the facility who was able to give her counseling on SGBV.

Quarterly report on support of adolescents

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown of the country in order to control the spread the of the virus, we are super excited to share what CFU has been up to on supporting the health needs of adolescents in the Kamuli district https://goto.gg/50405. We set up a youth corner within the CFU Kamuli facility, where youth come in every week and discuss health topics that concern them. These discussion topics are identified by the youth with guidance from the CFU staff team. The adolescents received health education and guidance on various topics including menstrual health and hygiene, teenage pregnancy and its associated health risks, how to keep safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, some youth sought medical support as shown in the graph attached. We reached 86 adolescents and youths during the quarter and were provided with both health education and medical treatments.

We seek donations for our project https://goto.gg/50405 to help raise pads for girls and young women in Kamuli since this was identified as one of the main reasons girls get pregnant. Luck of pads among the girls and women exposes them to several risks including asking young men to support their menstrual hygiene. This goes without saying that the young boys take this as an opportunity to introduce sexual advances and hence abuse and the resultant teenage pregnancy.

Health and Social Needs Assessment of Adolescents

Adolescent and Youth Group Discussions

Child and Family Foundation Uganda (CFU) staff as a team are excited to share this first report of supporting health needs of 1000 adolescents in rural Kamuli Uganda at https://goto.gg/50405with support from GlobalGiving donors and supporters. The donations from GlobalGiving has enabled the CFU Team in Kamuli district Busoga region, Eastern Uganda conduct a needs assessment among 30 adolescents and youths with age from 10 years to 19 years. Busoga region is one of the regions with high levels of teenage pregnancy and school drop-outs in Uganda.

Group discussions with the adolescents and their leaders revealed that nearly half (43%) are in school and struggling to sustain school fees/tuition to remain in school, Young girls are challenged with accessing sanitary pads for menstrual hygiene. Youths who are out of school lack support to earn income or to be occupied with developmental activities. Youths who are involved in income generating activities do work faming with parents, brick making, poultry keeping, chapatti selling, working in a barber kiosk, sanitary pad craft making and hair dressing.

The adolescents and youths requested to be supported with following – counseling and guidance on how to grow and become responsible adults, succeed in education, social entrepreneurship, develop skills to earn a living, avoid early sex and pregnancy. They requested for CFU to set-up a youth center for skilling and development of their crafts including production of sanitary pads and slippers/flippers. Production of sanitary pads will be a source of income and as community contribution to improve access to sanitary hygiene for young girls and women. They requested for start-up capital to start or enhance income generating activities.

During the preparation for the needs assessment and later scale-up of the project activities, CFU administration oriented and trained 9 technical staff, 2 support staff, and 3 youths leaders to support the initial launch of the project activities.

We thank everyone donating towards this project as at inception, we have established the basic needs for adolescents and youth in the community. We are using this information to plan the initial activity interventions, community entry points, identify and train youth leaders and stakeholders to work with.
