I wish I had better news. This March marks the third year of the humanitarian crisis in Syria. More than 9 million people have been forced to flee their homes and over 100,000 have been killed. The number of innocent people caught in the crossfire is devastating — it is only expected to rise.
Because of your donations to date, Mercy Corps has delivered lifesaving relief to more than 2 million refugees. Because of you, more families have food to eat, clean water to drink and warm coats to survive the cold nights.
You have given children new opportunities and a reason to believe in a brighter future. When Mercy Corps asked Briksam, a 9-year-old refugee, what makes her happy, she replied: "Because you are here. I like going to school, studying and taking tests. Being with my family." Thank you for making a difference in Briksam's life.
But as you know, there are still so many more people in desperate need of your ongoing help.
The future of Syria is particularly bleak because nearly half of the refugees are children. This crisis is ripping youth from their roots; they are losing their homes, education, and childhood. Kids have witnessed some of the most horrific trauma imaginable. They need your help now to ensure they do not become a lost generation.
Families are losing hope of ever returning home. Yet neighboring nations, including Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, lack sufficient resources to support the constant flow of refugees into their borders — creating new tensions and challenges. Your donations are crucial to helping Mercy Corps meet urgent needs and ensure that refugee families and host communities can thrive long-term.
