An update on our work across East Africa

By Ehab Elsawaf | Dept. Director of Development (Major Gifts)

Thank you for your support of this project. I'm writing to share some updates on ActionAid's work in East Africa.

The East Africa food crisis continues to affect millions of people across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somaliland, with weather extremes, conflict, and economic shocks driving prolonged food insecurity. In 2023, these countries ranked among the top ten globally for major food crises, with over 1 million people in each facing severe conditions. Despite improvements in rainfall and sustained humanitarian aid reducing overall figures, food insecurity levels remain historically high.

ActionAid Kenya is responding across nine counties (Kajiado, Makueni, Garissa, Isiolo, Baringo, Turkana, Nairobi, Kilifi, Taita Taveta), targeting 12,196 households (~85,372 people). This response includes cash transfers (8,239 people), school feeding (13,078 children in 61 schools), rehabilitation of 12 boreholes (for water location and extraction), and 120 water trucking trips. Additionally, 2,400 dignity kits were distributed, 240 farmers have been supported with seeds, and 15 trainings were conducted on drought resilience and livelihoods.

ActionAid Ethiopia delivered emergency assistance to over 54,000 people across conflict- and drought-affected areas.Since the start of the crisis, 20,176 people in the north and 34,277 in the south and southeast were reached through multipurpose cash, food distribution, health services access, and WASH activities.

ActionAid Somaliland has been responding to the compounded effects of drought and flooding. The Gu rains (seasonsal rainfall between April and June) have brought both relief and destruction—improving food security while also displacing over 50,000 people and affecting 127,000 through flooding. Immediate needs include scaling food and cash aid, investments in climate-resilient agriculture, and anticipatory action for ongoing rains and locust threats.

Your support helped power all of this work, and sustained support, will have a long term impact. Thank you for your generosity and partnership during these challenging times.
